What is Super
Cow?

This unusual use of cattle was launched in the early 1990s when a San
Francisco area biomedical firm was looking for a "clean" herd to supply hides
for collagen production.

1 What is Super Cow?They look like normal cows. They sound like normal cows. They even smell like
normal cows. But these are Super Cows, unlike any others in the United States. They help
puff up the lips of sensuous actresses. They come to the rescue an elderly woman to help
them deal with incontinence. And if you are ever unlucky enough to get in an accident,
these Super Cows might provide you with a bone graft some day.
Yes, these cows, right here in Siskiyou County,
are a special breed. In order to produce something called collagen, which is manufactured
from the hide of the animal, these animals live a different kind of life. They don't
ingest hormones or antibiotics, and the people who raise them probably know more about the
personal history of each and every Super Cow than your doctor knows about you. The good
news for beef-eaters is that a secondary product - the meat from these specially bred cows
- will soon be available in a local meat market.
This story begins in
the 1800's when Edgar Ball became one of the first pioneers to enter the Butte Valley and
settle the Forest Meadows Ranch. There was a hotel at the ranch, and cattle drivers from
Linkville (now Klamath Falls) would stay overnight there en route to the railroad station
in Montague, which they reached via the Ball Mountain Road. The Prather family bought the
ranch just after the century and added a lumber mill and narrow gauge railroad on the
property. In the 1930s the ranch changed hands again, this time into the ownership of the
Robinson family.
Remember the Ralphs line of grocery stores? In
1964, the ranch was purchased by Ralphs Ranches, whose primary stockholder is Walter
Ralph, founder of the grocery store chain. Ralph, who lives in Beverly Hills, opted to
keep the name of the ranch Prather Ranch. The ranch consists of 3,000 acres called the
Headquarters Ranch, which is where the pastures, pens and new slaughterhouse are located,
and another 3.000 acres used for hay production. Jim Rickert, a Fall River Valley
resident, has been the business manager of the ranch for nearly 14 years. It was Rickert
who brought the idea of Super Cows to Siskiyou County. He was the one who made the
connection between the Prather Ranch and Collagen Corporation, a company based in Palo
Alto.

(What is Collagen?)Collagen is the primary component of the skin's
connective tissue matrix and is responsible for the strength, spring and thickness of
youthful skin. Proline is an essential amino acid for collagen synthesis. Collagen
deposition depends upon having an ideal balance of nutrients such as ascorbic acid and
other bio-elements which are lacking in aging skin. The optimal concentration of nutrients
stimulates the constant cycle of collagen renewal inherent in the skin. Proline
incorporation is a precursor triggering collagen deposition. Measuring the amount of
incorporated proline is an acceptable indication of collagen deposition.

(Notes from the Editor: September 1999)
The 1900s has now only several months to go and Y2K issue is coming soon in
reality although nobody knows what may really happen then; from the last day of 1999 to
the first day of the year 2000. This is not an act of God, however. This is a technical
problem human has created. In the early stages of computer industry we had a physical
limitation to run the machine. It is a limitation due to available memory and peripheral
devices. People working in the computer industry may have not expected that "two
digits of YEAR coding" may cause such social and even political problems(in addition
to computer technicalities) as we observe today around the world. This is nothing but a
proof that demonstrates the information technologies is so crucial and fundamental in our
everyday life today. Internet surely accelerates this new information age.Just a few days ago, in the meantime, we learned a terrible
earthquake report from Taiwan. We had the similar report from Turkey a month ago. This is
truly an act of God but not human. The death toll may rise over 2,000 in Taiwan and
Turkish earthquake had fatalities over 5,000. However, when more information coming out
from the scenes both in Taiwan and Turkey, we do find out that "human" errors
and intentional malpractices are one of the true reasons why so many deaths are counted. A
report from Taiwan shows that many empty "oil tin cans" are found in the
structure. This is totally unacceptable but it is a truth. It appears that some basic
principles are missing. Hurricanes and typhoons are phenomenal this year being an act of
God. It might be a kind of indication and message that we must respect the
"nature" once again. It is where MLT's business philosophy stands. The same
"nature" at the foot of Mt. Shasta has produced the Super Cow, this month's
highlight. This is a cow with supreme quality for beef eaters in additon to collagen
extractions being bred in the natural surroundings in the northern California.
MLT continues its efforts to keep updates on relative business information about
the industry and hopes to bring readers with more valuable and interesting information. We
target all our time and effort to "organic" foods so as to keep our eyes on
"healthiness, freshness, cleanness" of our quality life today. And we always
appreciate your support and welcome your comments and suggestions, thank you.
